In 1910, the first ALFA 24 HP front-end consisted of a large radiator that was flanked by two side gas-fired lanterns. As years progressed, the creation of new machining allowed the shapes to become smoother and more dynamic making it possible to distinguish. Twenty years later, the front-end continued to evolve as it developed a deeper incline with a protective grille.
The 1955 Alfa Giulietta was the first time we saw the arrival of the celebrated three-part 'trilobo' theme with a central shield and iconic side whiskers, accompanied by round headlights. During the modern or 'rational' era, the entire width of the front-end was taken up by an air intake incorporating the shield and headlights. These were the features that varied the most: the headlights were round on the GTA, rectangular on the Alfasud and trapezoid on the Alfa 75. On the 164 and the GTV/Spider, the badge returned to its position resting on the hood. On the 156, the badge acquired a dominant role on the front end, moving the license plate to the one side. The trilobo theme was an elegance of a unique and distinctive design which has earned a place of honor in automotive history. In recent years, Alfa Romeo vehicles have gone back to the iconic 'trilobo' theme again and again – for example the 8C Competizione and the 4C.
The front-end is still a distinguishing element, even on the most recent additions to the Alfa Romeo lineup. The Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe and 4C Spider continue an Alfa Romeo tradition of performance-oriented lines and proportions. Inspired by the 1967 Tipo 33 Stradale, considered by many as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, the 4C models are just as shapely, and offer the classic Alfa Romeo V-shaped “plunging neckline” front grille.
